On 9 August, Marrickville came alive for Dying to Know Day – a national initiative to encourage open conversations about death, dying, and end-of-life planning. Our local event was warm, vibrant, and full of connection.

We had live music setting the tone, plenty of delicious food, and even a lively round of death trivia that had everyone learning (and laughing) together. Guests could explore colouring stations, a coffin display, a flower arranging demonstration by local florist Suz of Bold Botanicals, as well as cooling plate and urn displays.

The highlight for many was the series of open and thoughtful talks with local funeral directors – including myself, Matt from Idyllic Funerals, along with Olivia Andrew and Kerri Mills from Inner West Funerals, and Andrea Beaumont. Together, we shared insights, answered questions, and encouraged people to think about their choices and wishes.

Events like this show how powerful it can be when communities come together to discuss the things we often avoid – with curiosity, compassion, and even a bit of fun.
